Summer is as hard on our hair as it on our skin. The humidity rises up and causes skin and hair problems. Summer is the great time to do outdoor activities that involves spending a lot of time in the sun. But, too much sun can be harsh on our hair and so we need to take extra care and protect it from damage.

The sunlight can be just as damaging as a hot blow dyer, our hair may also feel “tired” after a day at the beach or so, the sun exposure will damage our hair’s natural protective film that causes it to brittle, dull and fragile.

So before exposing to sunlight here are some summer hair care tips that you can follow to protect your hair from damage.

  1. Remember to drink plenty of water to keep you hydrated during summer.
  2. Protect your hair from direct sunlight by wearing hat, scarf or bandana on your head when you’re at the beach or out in the hot sun.
  3. If you are planning to go swimming in the pool, wet your hair before getting in. The sun, heat, humidity and even chlorine from a pool can damage the hair’s cuticle resulting in dry hair, split ends, frizzy and brittle hair.
  4. Rinse hair in fresh water immediately before and after swimming in a pool or sea water. (Wet hair will absorb less chlorine than dry hair.)
  5. Deep condition your hair using a product containing keratin, jojoba oil, wheat germ protein or other natural ingredients that increase moisture, shine and elasticity.
  6. Leave-in conditioners can be a good choices during the summer months since heat helps activate the ingredients to better penetrate the hair.
  7. Also try to avoid using too much of the hair dryer or hair curlers or any other such type of heating devices as much as possible during summer this might be too much for your hair to take.
  8. Avoid using any kind of alcoholic products on your hair as they cause more drying. Use natural products as far as possible.
  9. You could also try using a moisturizing shampoo during the summer rather than the normal shampoo. For summer months consider switching to hair care products  that are as all natural as possible.
  10. Finally, schedule trims for the beginning and end of the summer season to rid your hair of dry, older ends and keep your cut in shape.

Hanging out in the sun without protection for your hair and scalp is the worst thing you can do. With these simple steps of hair care and attention to your hair, you could avoid summer damage to your hair and keep them looking shiny, soft and healthy.
